Area code 508 was created as a split from area code 617 on July 16, 1988 and covers southcentral & most of southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands. Prior to this split, all of eastern and central Massachusetts only used 617. Use of 508 became mandatory January 1, 1989. On September 1, 1997, Area code 978 (northcentral & most of northeastern Massachusetts) split from 508. 774 has been sharing the service area since May 2, 2001.
